Making a difference in our local area

For over a decade, our employees have organised and participated in an annual Clean Up Day in our local area. The Clean Up Days have always taken place in the suburbs that surround our operations. We are all part of our local community and care for our local environment.

Our Clean Up Days involve groups of our employees, and community members, coming together to remove rubbish and debris from our waterways, shorelines and recreational areas.

The Throsby Creek mangroves and shoreline in Carrington is a common site for our Clean Up Days and our rubbish removal efforts are greatly appreciated by our local community.

Every clean up event is planned for low tide to allow greater access to the mangroves and surrounding shoreline.  Since our clean up days began, we estimate that over 800kgs of rubbish has been removed from the local environment through this initiative.

The rubbish is typically made up of small soft plastics, straws, cups and cutlery items, hard/solid plastics, plastic drink bottles, aluminium cans and cigarette butts.  Of course, over the years we have also removed some larger and more unusual items including bicycles, tyres, trolleys, televisions, street signs and even a backyard fire pit!

Other locations for our clean up days have included the shoreline surrounding the Newcastle Rowing Club on Throsby Creek at Carrington, the harbourside parklands at Stockton as well as the area under the Stockton Bridge.
