Helping our Children get a Strong Start

Fern Bay Public School is thriving. With 115 students currently enrolled, that number is expected to grow to 200 in the next few years, according to Principal Drew Janetzki.

Funding from Port Waratah has helped deliver key improvements for the rapidly growing primary school.

“We’re very fortunate to have the support of Port Waratah,” Mr Janetzki said. “Their very generous community funding has allowed us to supplement our resources and provide additional extra-curricular activities for our students.”

Port Waratah funded a number of new Apple iPads for differentiated learning in the classroom and to lend out to families that do not have access to a computer at home. This new resource proved particularly helpful for periods of home learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The iPads are also equipped with Bluetooth keyboards so students can learn how to type, which is another essential skill they will need during their time at school and in their future careers.

Port Waratah also invested in a playground upgrade for all students, but especially benefits those in years Kindergarten – Year 2.  Research shows that students who have an opportunity to play, return to their classrooms in a more positive and happy state, which helps them to be better learners. Playground time also helps develop important life skills including cooperation, sharing and getting along with others.
